In the men’s freestyle wrestling 65 kg category, Bajrang Poonia lost in the semifinals to India in Tokyo, Goda. Haji Aliyev of Azerbaijan defeated Bajrang in the semifinals. The Azerbaijan won 12–5. Now Bajrang will be back on the field for the bronze medal fight.
Bajrang Poonia, who had previously beaten the Azerbaijani star 8–6 in the Pro Wrestling League in 2019, could not put up the same performance this time around. Haji Aliyev is a three – time world champion and bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics. Aliyev advanced to the semifinals, beating Kazakhstan’s Daulat Niasbekov 9–1 in the quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day, Bajrang entered the Pune final with a thumping comeback after falling behind till the last minute. Bajrang defeated Iran’s Mortaza Giazi in the quarterfinals. Bajrang advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Kyrgyzstan’s El Nasser Akmataliyev in the quarterfinals.
