Latvia and Lithuania Deepen Strategic Ties at Annual Informal Seminar
Liepāja, Latvia – July 19 – Senior officials and experts from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Lithuania convened in Liepāja today for their annual informal seminar, a crucial meeting aimed at bolstering strategic collaboration and addressing key regional and global challenges. The gathering underscored the enduring strength of bilateral relations and a shared commitment to navigating the complex geopolitical landscape.
Strengthening Regional and Transatlantic Cooperation
The seminar, officially opened by Ivars Lasis, political Director of the Latvian Ministry of foreign Affairs, highlighted the traditionally close and friendly ties between the two neighboring Baltic nations. Lasis emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in the current challenging geopolitical climate, reaffirming both countries’ dedication to joint action within vital international frameworks such as the European Union (EU) and NATO.
Participants lauded the robust cooperation within the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) framework, recognizing its notable contribution to enhancing regional security and resilience. Discussions also explored avenues for expanding NB8 collaboration and mutual support, further solidifying the region’s collective strength.
EU Presidency Alignment and Transatlantic Security
A significant portion of the discussions focused on current developments within the EU, with particular attention paid to preparations for Latvia’s and Lithuania’s upcoming presidencies of the EU Council in 2027 and 2028, respectively. Officials exchanged perspectives on strategic priorities and the long-term EU budget framework, signaling a coordinated approach to shaping the Union’s future direction.
Transatlantic relations were a prominent theme,with attendees underscoring their critical role in ensuring the defense and security of the Euro-Atlantic region. A united commitment was expressed towards reinforcing NATO, increasing defense investments, enhancing military capabilities, and deepening cooperation between NATO and the EU.
Shared Interests in Global Forums
The meeting also addressed the Baltic States’ shared interests within the United Nations,especially in anticipation of Latvia’s upcoming term on the UN Security Council. Lithuanian officials shared valuable insights from their prior experience on the Council during the 2014-2015 period, fostering a collaborative approach to multilateral diplomacy.
Concluding with Defense Training Insights
To conclude the productive seminar, both delegations visited the Latvian National Armed Forces Naval Training Center and the Baltic States Divers School. This visit provided diplomats with firsthand insights into ongoing regional defense training efforts and collaborations with international partners, reinforcing the practical application of their strategic discussions.
Now in its ninth year, the annual seminar alternates between Latvia and Lithuania, serving as an indispensable platform for high-level dialog, aligning foreign policy priorities, and strengthening joint efforts to promote shared values and strategic goals in international institutions.
