Former President Barack Obama has walked back comments that sparked a global frenzy over the weekend, clarifying his remarks about the existence of extraterrestrial life. Following an interview with political podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, where he stated that “they’re real,” Obama took to Instagram on Sunday evening to offer a more nuanced perspective.
“I was trying to stick with the spirit of [Cohen’s] speed round, but since it’s gotten attention let me clarify,” Obama wrote. “Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low.” He concluded, “I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”
The initial comments, made during a quick-fire question round on Cohen’s podcast, quickly circulated online, generating headlines proclaiming Obama’s confirmation of alien existence. During the interview, Obama also dismissed the notion of a secret government facility housing alien technology, stating, “They’re not being kept at Area 51. There’s no underground facility — unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the President of the United States.” He revealed that one of his first questions upon entering office was, “Where are the aliens?”
Obama’s clarification arrives amidst a growing cultural fascination with unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), formerly known as UFOs. The U.S. Government has recently taken steps to investigate and publicly address reported sightings, moving the conversation from the fringes of conspiracy theory into the realm of national security. While Obama’s statement doesn’t directly address the recent government initiatives, it does reflect a cautious approach to the question of extraterrestrial visitation.
This isn’t the first time Obama has publicly addressed the topic of alien life. In a 2021 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, he recounted asking his intelligence advisors about the possibility of hidden alien specimens and spacecraft upon taking office. He was told there was no such evidence. However, he acknowledged the existence of unexplained aerial phenomena, stating, “What is true, and I’m actually being serious here, is that there are, there’s footage and records of objects in the skies, that we don’t know exactly what they are.”
He further elaborated on the potential societal impact of confirming alien life during a 2021 appearance on The Ezra Klein Show podcast. Obama suggested that such a discovery would likely trigger a range of reactions, from increased military spending to the emergence of new religions, and potentially even endless arguments. He also posited that the revelation wouldn’t fundamentally alter the human condition, as “politics is premised on the fact that we are these tiny organisms on this little speck floating in the middle of space.”
The former president’s latest statement underscores the distinction between the statistical probability of life existing elsewhere in the universe and the lack of concrete evidence of extraterrestrial contact. While acknowledging the vastness of space and the likelihood of life beyond Earth, Obama remains grounded in the observable reality of the situation – a reality, he emphasizes, that did not reveal any alien visitors during his eight years in the White House.
The online reaction to Obama’s clarification has been largely playful, with social media users joking about which aliens prompted the former president to issue the statement. The incident highlights the enduring public fascination with the possibility of life beyond Earth and the continued intrigue surrounding unexplained phenomena in our skies. It also demonstrates the power of a seemingly offhand comment to ignite a global conversation, even when quickly followed by a clarifying statement.
