Bartsch warns of further costs for migration

The federal government got off very cheaply at the refugee summit, says FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr on “Maischberger”. Left colleague Dietmar Bartsch warns: The billion is not the last word.

Has Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) fobbed off the states and municipalities at the refugee summit? In any case, FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr was relieved shortly after the top meeting when Sandra Maischberger asked him about the debt brake. “One billion is relatively little compared to what the federal government is already doing – around 16 billion this year alone. Luckily,” said the liberal on Wednesday on the ARD talk show. “The billion is not the last word,” warned Left Party leader Dietmar Bartsch.

The guests

  • Cem Özdemir (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), Federal Minister of Agriculture
  • Christian Dürr, FDP parliamentary group leader
  • Dietmar Bartsch, Left Party leader
  • Ulrich Wickert, ex-ARD daily topics moderator
  • Robin Alexander, “The World”
  • Yasmine M’Barek, “Zeit Online”

“It was a peak of disappointment,” Bartsch summed up at “Maischberger”. In view of the special fund for the Bundeswehr, the money that has now been promised is “damn little”. “Now there is a marshalling yard, the municipalities will continue to suffer,” warned the left-wing politician. For him, the problem after the refugee summit is only postponed. His assumption: “There will be huge clashes in the next few weeks. The traffic light will not be able to withstand it like this.”

“Seehofer cannot be traffic light policy”

Bartsch spoke out in favor of modern immigration law, but wants to leave the right to asylum untouched. That must remain humane, he warned. “The (Horst) Seehofer can’t be the policy of the traffic light now,” said Bartsch. At a press conference, the former interior minister was delighted that 69 Afghans had been deported on his 69th birthday. “That was absurd,” agreed Dürr.

Markus Söder (CSU) could not come on the show as planned because of the refugee summit. But its predecessor was almost omnipresent in the discussion. “Seehofer deported people who had a job. That’s absolutely wrong,” Dürr clarified. It must be made easier for people who want to work in Germany to gain a foothold here. But there should be no immigration into the security systems.

“Why are people fleeing Africa? But not because there are cash benefits in Germany. That’s absurd,” Bartsch criticized Dürr’s demand that asylum seekers should only be granted benefits in kind. The Left Group leader also warned against trying to solve the refugee problem at the external borders of the European Union. “No matter how high we can build fences – Turkey decides when ships come,” said Bartsch.

According to observers, a defeat for Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his conservative Islamic party, the AKP, is possible in the forthcoming presidential elections in Turkey. “We should prepare for a possible election victory for the opposition,” demanded Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) on “Maischberger”. Germany must help Turkey to become a pluralistic country again after Erdoğan’s authoritarian rule.

Why do many German Turks vote for Erdoğan?

In a video, the Green politician called on Germans of Turkish origin not to vote for Erdoğan again. A failed integration in Germany is also to blame for his electoral success. Özdemir was born in Swabia. Nevertheless, he was a foreigner in his home country and had to give extensive reasons for his application for German citizenship when he was 18, he said. Instead of making it easier for migrants, “we watched Erdoğan pull these people over to him,” Özdemir criticized. He sees parallels with German supporters of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.
