Current Status of Trade Negotiations

U.S. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent stated on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, that he is confident a trade deal with China is within reach. His comments came as reciprocal tariffs are scheduled to take effect in November, though he anticipates further discussions before ⁣that deadline.

Bessent⁣ shared his outlook during an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box”,⁢ noting that each round of‍ talks has been increasingly productive.⁤ He believes China is now recognizing the possibility of a trade ⁤agreement.

History⁣ of Tariffs ⁣adn Suspensions

The current negotiations follow a ⁢period of fluctuating tensions, beginning with President Trump’s proclamation of⁣ initial tariffs on U.S. global trading ⁤partners on April 2nd.Initially, China faced potential tariffs of up to 145%, but these were suspended to allow for continued dialog.

An initial ‍suspension of reciprocal tariffs ‍was set to expire on August 12th,but President Trump extended it to November 10th,providing additional time for ⁣negotiations. This ⁤extension demonstrates a continued willingness to pursue ⁤a⁣ negotiated solution.

Impact on Global Markets

Bessent reported that ‍U.S.trading partners have expressed concerns about a surge⁣ in Chinese goods entering thier markets, creating economic disruption. He described these partners as “slightly apoplectic” about⁢ the influx of Chinese products.

The United States recorded a trade⁤ deficit with China of nearly $300 billion in 2024. However, this deficit is projected to decrease ‍significantly in 2025 and ⁢through July 2025, it stood at $128 ⁤billion, indicating a current downward trend.

Projected Trade⁣ Deficit Reduction

U.S. Trade Representative ⁢Jamieson Greer anticipates the trade deficit⁣ with China will narrow by at least 30% in 2025,⁤ with ‍potential for further reduction in⁤ 2026.This projection suggests a move towards a more balanced trade relationship.

Bessent emphasized the⁤ goal of achieving “fair ‍trade” and bringing the trade relationship into balance, rather than simply reducing the deficit.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming talks ‍in November will be crucial in determining whether ⁣a extensive trade deal ⁣can ⁤be reached. The success of these ⁢negotiations will have significant implications for the ⁤global economy and the⁤ relationship between the United states and China.
