It was reported that South Korea was invited to the ‘Democracy Summit’ led by US President Joe Biden. According to the message from this meeting, which aims to contain China and Russia, it is predicted that it will affect the diplomatic strategy of the government, which maintains ‘strategic ambiguity’ between the US and China.

Reuters reported on the 7th (local time) that South Korea had been invited to the Democracy Summit to be held via video from the 9th to 10th of next month, citing US government sources. The Democracy Summit is a cooperative initiative aimed at mobilizing democracies around the world against authoritarian regimes as part of President Biden’s presidential campaign promise. South Korea has been mentioned as a major invited country along with major US allies such as Japan and the European Union (EU).

The agenda for the summit is expected to focus on China-Russia checks. It is reported that countries such as the Philippines, Poland, and Iraq, which have been criticized for being threatened, have also been invited to the meeting. According to Reuters, a high-ranking US government official said, “Countries with different experiences of democracy in each region were invited.” It is analyzed that countries that appear to be at odds with the core values of democracy, which are the core values of the conference, were included in the participants as the project was carried out with a joint response to China and Russia in mind.

North Korea and China have already protested, and this is expected to affect the government’s declaration of an end to the war. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized in September, saying, “The substance of the US gathering of the so-called ‘democracy summit’ is drawing a line based on ideology and conducting collective politics, which will only cause division and confrontation.” North Korea’s Foreign Ministry also criticized on the 3rd, saying, “The US is using it as an excuse to oppress other countries and interfere in their internal affairs by distorting the essence of democracy.”
