Cambodia’s Tourism Industry Sees Remarkable Growth with a Surge in Foreign Visitors

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) — The Ministry of Tourism in Cambodia has reported a significant increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting the country during the first nine months of 2023. According to the latest data, the arrival of international visitors has surged by an impressive 211 percent, surpassing last year’s figure of 1.26 million to reach an astounding 3.92 million.

The report highlights that Thailand emerged as the leading source of tourists, with nearly 1.34 million visitors during the period of January-September this year. Following closely behind were tourists from Vietnam with 730,075 people and China with 405,514 people, indicating growth rates of 189 percent, 156 percent, and 10.5 percent, respectively.

The report further reveals that the majority of tourists, numbering approximately 1.34 million, entered Cambodia through its airports, marking an increase of 186 percent. Meanwhile, 2.58 million travelers opted for land and water routes, showing a substantial rise of 224 percent. Sophiak, the Minister and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, expressed optimism, stating that the country anticipates attracting five million foreign tourists this year. He emphasized that Cambodia is a safe and welcoming travel destination for all, including the Chinese population.

Highlighting the recent inauguration of the Chinese-invested Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) on October 16, Sophiak emphasized its significance in boosting Cambodia’s tourism, economy, trade, and investment sectors. He expressed hope for attracting new international airlines to Siem Reap Province, which is renowned for its iconic Angkor Archaeological Park, including the famous Angkor Wat.

It is important to note that tourism serves as one of the key pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, alongside industries such as clothing, shoes, agricultural products, construction, and real estate.
