The Long-awaited change

For years, many Gmail users have been embarrassed by usernames created during their youth, feeling stuck with addresses that no longer reflect their current identity. Google previously warned that these usernames could not be changed, meaning users were potentially committed to these addresses indefinitely.

However, as of a few weeks prior to December 29, 2024, Google began rolling out a feature allowing users to change their Gmail usernames, responding to years of user requests. This change applies to accounts directly created with Gmail, a feature previously only available to those using third-party domains with Google’s services.

How the Change Was Announced

News of this update initially spread through a Telegram group called Google Pixelhub and a Google India technical support page, confirming the feature was live for users with Gmail domains. The information detailed that the username change would not affect existing email history or personal data.

limitations and Guidelines

While a significant improvement, the username change feature comes with limitations. Users are limited to a maximum of three username changes. Furthermore, a 12-month waiting period is required between each modification.

Importantly, users will retain access to their account using both the old and new usernames, with the new address functioning as a backup or alias. This ensures a smooth transition and continued access to their email.

Global Rollout and Backup Recommendation

Google is deploying this feature progressively worldwide. As of December 29, 2024, the availability date for Colombia, and other regions, remains uncertain. Google recommends backing up account data before initiating the username change process as a precautionary measure.

This information is current as of december 29, 2024, and is subject to change as Google continues its rollout.
