Chennai couple call it powder; 21,000 crore ‘Afghan liquor’ seized in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) last week seized two containers worth Rs 21,000 crore at Mundra port in Gujarat. The investigation team said that these were high quality heroin and were tested in a central laboratory. Indications are that it was delivered for distribution in India.

The heroin from Afghanistan was sent from Bandar Abbas port in Iran to Mundra port in Gujarat. It is suspected that the drug was used by ISIS and the Taliban to raise money for terrorist activities. These were banned by the previous government in Afghanistan but are now active again.

1999.579 kg was seized from the first container and 988.64 kg from the second container. Two arrested Afghan nationals will be questioned. It is learned that they have indirect links with ISIS. Preliminary estimates put the value of heroin at Rs 3,500 crore. But after a six-day investigation, it was revealed that the heroin seized was worth over Rs 21,000 crore.

Machavaram Sudhakar, a native of Chennai, and his wife Govindaraju Durgapurna Vaishali claimed that the containers were brought to Mundra port as face powder. Their Vijayawada-based Ashi Trading Company moved things. Hassan Hussain Ltd., headquartered in Kandahar, Afghanistan, was in charge of exports.

The arrested couple was produced in Bhuj court and remanded for 10 days. DRI tests are also being conducted in Ahmedabad, Mundra, Chennai, Vijayawada and Delhi. Three people have been arrested in Mumbai. Two of them are said to be Afghan nationals. The names of those arrested have not been released. Indications are that more containers may be seized.
