In accordance with a statement released by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security on the 17th, the Public Security Bureau of Yunnan Province, which shares a border with Myanmar, successfully took custody of 2,349 Chinese nationals suspected of online fraud from the UWSA, an ethnic armed group in northeastern Myanmar, on the 14th.

This incident marks the highest number of Chinese deportees from Myanmar in a single day. The UWSA recently launched a joint operation involving police and military personnel from three jurisdictions, raiding the hideouts of over 20 online fraud syndicates. This operation resulted in the arrest of 2,680 individuals, including the aforementioned Chinese deportees. Additionally, authorities seized 6,000 cell phones, computers, and around 500 vehicles used in the commission of these crimes.

The total tally of Chinese citizens returned from Myanmar due to their involvement in online fraud has now surpassed 4,666. Last month, the UWSA apprehended 1,200 Chinese individuals associated with online fraud and subsequently handed them over to Chinese public security for repatriation.

In recent years, China has intensified its efforts, collaborating with local authorities, to combat the surge in online fraud targeting Chinese nationals in neighboring countries like Myanmar. The majority of these perpetrators are Chinese themselves, employing tactics such as luring compatriots to these regions under the pretense of high wages, only to enslave them and coerce their participation in online fraud schemes. Non-compliance often results in brutal acts of violence, including physical assault and even murder.

Southeast Asia, particularly Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia, has been identified as a global hub for online fraud. Chinese public security authorities estimate that in the Myanmar-Thailand border region alone, over 1,000 online fraud syndicates entice more than 100,000 individuals daily to engage in various forms of online fraud, including romance scams and voice phishing.

A recent report published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) revealed that hundreds of thousands of individuals in Southeast Asia are embroiled in international cybercrime, with approximately 120,000 and 100,000 persons involved in online fraud in Myanmar and Cambodia, respectively.

Chinese public security officials have reported a significant reduction in online fraud rates and associated damages within China for the month of August compared to the same period last year, thanks to their collaborative efforts with authorities in northern Myanmar. The number of reported online fraud cases decreased by 24%, while damage inflicted decreased by 20.5%. Chinese authorities remain committed to ongoing cooperation and coordination with neighboring countries’ law enforcement agencies to dismantle these criminal networks.
