Efforts Underway to Shift Unsafe Anganwadis to New Buildings in Kozhikode District

Kozhikode District Takes Measures to Relocate Unsafe Anganwadis

Kozhikode district has taken proactive steps to address the safety concerns of Anganwadis by initiating plans to shift them to new buildings. This decision comes after several Anganwadis reported compromised safety due to falling tree branches, prompting them to request the local panchayats for tree removal.

To address this issue, the Vanitha Shishuviksana Department conducted an Anganwadi fitness audit, revealing that 32 Anganwadis in the district were operating without proper fitness certifications. In order to ensure the safety of the children, it is recommended that the new buildings should provide an area of 500 to 600 square feet, along with necessary facilities such as bathing, drinking water, and electricity.

During the inspection, it was observed that some Anganwadis lacked gas facilities and had dangerous wooden structures, posing potential risks to the children’s well-being. Out of the 2938 Anganwadis inspected, 450 were operating in rented premises. It is imperative that immediate actions are taken to rectify the fitness issues in these Anganwadis.

Normally, the fitness of Anganwadis is assessed every year before Pravesanotsavam. However, this time, some Anganwadis began operating prior to ensuring their fitness. To address this concern, the Women Development Department conducted a special inspection to identify Anganwadis operating without fitness certificates, which had previously been a widespread issue in the state.

The responsibility lies with the Child Development Project Officer and the Supervisor to ensure the safety of the children in Anganwadis. If any buildings are found to be unsafe, immediate measures must be taken to relocate them to secure buildings and obtain the necessary fitness certificates.

Additionally, it is crucial that the Child Development Project Officer and the Supervisor actively oversee the implementation of adequate safety measures within the Anganwadis. The government has emphasized the need for these officials to personally ensure the proper functioning of the buildings.

By prioritizing the safety of children in Anganwadis, Kozhikode district is demonstrating its commitment to providing a secure and supportive environment for their growth and development.
