Akhil was known to travel in a luxury car, which was eventually seized by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Controversies and Political Connections

Bhasurangan, who switched allegiance from the Congress to the CPI in 2006, had strong connections across political parties. It is alleged that he provided financial assistance to members of various parties, effectively minimizing complaints against him. Furthermore, there have been claims that he facilitated appointments in banks and other institutions for individuals recommended by party leaders. There are also rumors within the CPI that large sums of money were distributed to leaders of different parties for election campaigns.

Allegations were also made against Bhasurangan for attempting to thwart the CPM candidate in Kattakkada during the last election. Additionally, he was known to maintain close ties with key district and state leaders of the CPI, providing financial assistance to some on a regular basis.

Assassination Attempt and Legal Issues

Bhasurangan narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt, which led to an attack on a local CPI secretary and a subsequent tragic suicide. It is reported that ongoing problems within the party and a dispute with former secretary Sajikumar, as well as a history of fraudulent activities at the bank dating back 30 years, have added to the controversies surrounding Bhasurangan.

Despite facing allegations of irregularities and financial misconduct, the former president was said to have received assistance from high-level connections, allowing him to evade legal consequences for his actions.

Bhasurangan, who committed irregularities of 101 crores in the Kandala Service Co-operative Bank, was leading a luxurious life. There was opposition within the CPI to Akhiljit’s son’s lavish lifestyle. Akhil traveled in a luxury car. No action was taken on the complaints as they related to senior leaders in the CPI, CPM and Congress. The luxury car was seized by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). A detailed investigation is going on regarding Akhil’s money transactions. Akhil used to run a supermarket in Nadu but it closed down later. He also ran a restaurant in Poojapura. The ED is also investigating the family’s land dealings.

Bhasurangan, who left the Congress and joined the CPI in 2006, had connections with all parties. By helping all party members financially, complaints were limited. Appointments in banks and other institutions were also given to those recommended by the party leaders. There is talk within the CPI that large sums of money have been given to leaders of different parties for campaigning during the elections. It was alleged that Bhasurangan had tried to defeat the CPM candidate in Kattakkada in the last election.

There was a situation where the applicant had to be warned directly. According to the local leadership, Bhasurangan stopped working for the opposition after informing the top CPM leaders. ED has received information about the leaders’ benami deposits in the bank. Bhasurangan also had a habit of giving vehicles to leaders. Bhasurangan maintained close ties with key leaders of the district and some of the state leaders of the CPI. CPI leaders say some of them regularly receive financial assistance.

There was also an incident where Bhasurangan narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. In July, Maranallur CPI local secretary AR Sudhirkhan was attacked with acid. Kattakkada CPI Constituency Secretariat member Sajikumar Sudhir Khan was attacked while he was sleeping. 80% vision loss in one eye. Sajikumar came first targeting Bhasurangan. As the house was crowded, Bhasurangan’s close friend Sudheer Khan went to his house and attacked. Later, Sajikumar committed suicide.

Problems in the party and a dispute between the two with Sajikumar, the former secretary of the Ksheera Sangh of which Sudhir Khan is the president, led to the attack. The investigation found that cases of fraud started at Bhasurangan Bank 30 years ago. Following the irregularities committed in 1993, the Co-operative Department issued a directive to raise a fine, but it was canceled by the LDF government. Even then, Bhasurangan was helped by high connections.
