Hailing from Thalakulathur, Kozhikode, Faiz’s journey has reached Muscat. Thirty-five-year-old Faiz Ashraf Ali is on his way to London on a cycling trip when trends change with age. As part of the 75th Independence Day celebrations, Fais is crossing two continents on one cycle, led by Team Echo Wheelers and supported by Rotary International. Faiz travels on a circuit from the American company Surly, which costs two and a half lakh rupees. Faiz left Thiruvananthapuram on August 15. He will cycle over 30,000 km through 35 countries in 450 days and reach London in March 2024.
The trip to Kerala was completed by the second week of September. Pakistan and China are not eligible for a visa, so these countries are avoided. It was decided to travel from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai by bicycle and fly to Oman and from there by bicycle to United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Georgia and Turkey to enter Europe.
Faiz shares the details of his journey through his social media account ‘Eco Wheelers’. After quitting his job as a network engineer at Wipro, he took up cycling. The first trip was in 2019. He was traveling from Kozhikode to Singapore with his friend Ajith. He reached Singapore by traveling 8,000 km in 104 days through Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. Faiz says the trip to Singapore gave him the inspiration and courage to travel to London.
After reaching each area by bike, Faiz’s next step is to stay there for a day and visit the schools and campuses there. Faiz said that he was attracted to cycling because of the knowledge that cycling is the only way to reduce mental stress along with having fun and for heart diseases, and he bought a bike in 2018 and traveled two or three times from Kozhikode to Mangalore .
