Federal Minister of the Interior has no understanding for the climate group “Last Generation”

Federal Interior Minister Faeser thinks little of the methods of the “last generation”. Instead, democratic solutions are needed.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has criticized the road blockades by the “Last Generation” climate protection group. “I don’t have the slightest understanding of the actions,” Faeser told the “Tagesspiegel” on Monday.

“We can only fight the climate crisis democratically.” The support in society is the decisive basis for this. Anyone who blocks others in their everyday lives and makes their lives difficult is doing a great deal of harm to climate protection.

Numerous roadblocks by the “last generation” had led to traffic jams and obstructions on Berlin’s streets at the start of the week. The climate group had previously announced an expansion of its actions in order to paralyze the entire capital if possible.

Faeser: “Don’t dance around on your nose”

“The rule of law cannot be fooled around,” said Faeser. Legitimate protests always end when crimes are committed and the rights of others are violated. “The police have my full support if they take consistent action,” emphasized the minister.

According to the report, the number of crimes recorded by the police in connection with climate protests is increasing nationwide. From 880 registered crimes in 2021, the number increased significantly to 1,585 in 2022, according to “Tagesspiegel” information.

This primarily involves property damage, coercion offenses and violations of the Assembly Act. The figures are recorded by the Federal Criminal Police Office in the statistics on politically motivated crime.
