Regulars of the competition such as Aliou Cissé (Senegal), Rigobert Song (Cameroon) or Djamel Belmadi (Algeria) are again back with their 11. What could be more normal when we see the performances of some of these selections in the previous competitions.

Coach of the Lions of Teranga since March 2015, Aliou Cissé allowed Senegal to win the first African Cup of Nations in its history two years ago. At 47, he is considered the greatest Senegalese coach, who also had a rich career as a national team player, including a quarter-final at the World Cup in 2002.

The national Syli who failed in the round of 16 of the competition under Kaba Diawara returns with the same coach. In Cameroon, another glory returns to the head of its men. This is a legendary player from the country Rigobert Song.

Algeria coach since August 2018, Djamel Belmadi will once again lead the Fennecs team in this 34th edition. This was crowned with the Fennecs’ second title in the history of the competition, in 2019.

With the Malian selection since May 2022, the 46-year-old technician, Éric Chelle, is having his first experience outside of France. The Franco-Malian will feel a little at home during this CAN. At 51, the binational, Amir Abdou who has supported the Mauritania team since 2022 will present himself with his selection. Amir Abdou led the Coelacanthes to the round of 16 of the competition, during the previous edition. Today, making Mauritania shine is its challenge.

Juan Micha, 48-year-old Equatorial Guinean, coach of Equatorial Guinea, was promoted to head of the team in 2020 after coaching the youth categories (U17 and U20). Under his wing, Nzalang Nacional experienced its second unprecedented consecutive participation in the CAN after two consecutive absences.

Sébastien Desabre, 47-year-old coach of the DR Congo (French), arrived in August 2022 from Chamois Niortais, is continuing his career. Champion of Tunisia with ES Tunis (2014) and of Morocco with Wydad in 2017, he allowed the Leopards to return to the final phase, after their absence two years ago in Cameroon.

Internationals, like the Frenchman Jean-Louis Gasset, 70 years old and coach of the host country, Ivory Coast, appear in the competition. He who had been at the head of the selection since March 2022. The Frenchman Hubert Velud, at 64, coach of the Stallions is also a new face who appears in the competition as “foreigners”. After him, we must also count on the expertise of the Belgian, Portuguese and many other coaches.

The dice will be rolled this Saturday, January 13, 2024. As a reminder, the Egyptian Hassan Shehata holds a record in this area with his trophies won three times successively. First in 2006, then in 2008 and 2010. Another African is also a three-time winner of the continental cup with his country. It is Kumi Gyami who is the first national coach to win the trophy.
