Former President Moon Persuades Lee to End Hunger Strike

Former President Moon Jae-in made a visit to Green Hospital in Jungnang-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 19th to meet with Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who was currently in the hospital while on a hunger strike. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the current political situation and offer support to Representative Lee.

When former President Moon arrived at the hospital at 3:30 pm, he was warmly greeted by Chief of Staff Chun Jun-ho, Supreme Council member Seo Young-kyo, and former floor leader Park Hong-gorge. He then proceeded to have a private meeting with Representative Lee, which lasted for approximately 25 minutes. Also present at the meeting were Chief of Staff Cheon and Representative Yoon Geon-young, a close associate of former President Moon.

During the meeting, former President Moon passionately urged Representative Lee to end his hunger strike. He expressed his concern for Lee’s health and the impact his fasting was having on the public. Former President Moon emphasized that many people were in pain and sorrow witnessing Lee’s fast and urged him to stand up again.

Former President Moon reassured Lee that he was not alone, stating, “You always have to think about this.” He acknowledged the sincerity and determination that Lee had displayed throughout his fast, but recommended a change in strategy. He suggested that it was time to regain energy quickly and find a new way to continue fighting for their cause.

In response, Representative Lee expressed his gratitude for the visit but firmly stated his intention to persist with the hunger strike. He also took the opportunity to question President Yoon Seok-yeol’s political stance, remarking, “I don’t know about what he thinks in politics.”

The visit was made possible when former President Moon traveled to Seoul to attend the event commemorating the 5th anniversary of the ‘September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration’ held at Building 63 in Yeouido, Seoul. There were speculations within the party that former President Moon’s persuasive efforts could potentially lead to Lee’s decision to end the hunger strike.

Representative Lee began his hunger strike on the 18th in protest against the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s perceived reckless behavior. On the 19th day of fasting, his physical condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his transfer to a hospital near Yeouido and subsequently to Green Hospital.

The meeting between former President Moon and Representative Lee, characterized by its gravity and political significance, has brought renewed attention to the ongoing political landscape in South Korea.
