Former President Moon Persuades Lee to End Hunger Strike
Former President Moon Jae-in made a visit to Green Hospital in Jungnang-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 19th to meet with Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who was currently in the hospital while on a hunger strike. He suggested that it was time to regain energy quickly and find a new way to continue fighting for their cause.
In response, Representative Lee expressed his gratitude for the visit but firmly stated his intention to persist with the hunger strike. He also took the opportunity to question President Yoon Seok-yeol’s political stance, remarking, “I don’t know about what he thinks in politics.”
The visit was made possible when former President Moon traveled to Seoul to attend the event commemorating the 5th anniversary of the ‘September 19 Pyongyang Joint Declaration’ held at Building 63 in Yeouido, Seoul. There were speculations within the party that former President Moon’s persuasive efforts could potentially lead to Lee’s decision to end the hunger strike.
Representative Lee began his hunger strike on the 18th in protest against the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s perceived reckless behavior. On the 19th day of fasting, his physical condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his transfer to a hospital near Yeouido and subsequently to Green Hospital.
