Former Professor Donates $1 Billion to Albert Einstein College of Medicine for Free Tuition

A former professor of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City donated $1 billion to the college. Pay tuition fees for current and future generations of medical students to study for free. This is the largest single gift to a US medical college in history.

Reuters news agency said yesterday (26 February) that Dr Ruth Gottsman donated the money from the inheritance of her husband, Wall Street financier David “Sandy” Gottsman, who died in September. 2022, with Mr. Gottsman was an early investor in Warren Buffett’s shares in Berkshire Hathaway.

“I am very grateful to my late husband, Sandy, for leaving me this large sum of money. We are honored to donate this money to such a good cause,” said Dr. Gottsman in a joint statement with the college.

With this amount of donation All current medical students will receive a refund of their tuition for the spring semester of 2024, and all future medical students will receive free tuition.

Medical school tuition is about $60,000 a year, and many medical students graduate with more than $200,000 in debt.

“This amazing donation will help attract talented people who want to become doctors. But they may not have enough money to continue their medical studies,” the medical college said. He added that this donation is the largest ever to a medical college in the United States.

During his time, Dr Gottsman has researched childhood learning disabilities and created reading and writing programs for adults.
