Updated June 17, 2025
Omaha, Neb. — Gage Wood delivered a historic performance on Monday, throwing a no-hitter to lead Arkansas past Murray State 3-0 in an elimination game at the Men’s College World Series. The dominant outing marked only the third no-hitter in the tournament’s history and the first since 1960.
Wood’s bid for a perfect game ended in the eighth inning when he hit Dom Decker with a breaking ball. Undeterred, he finished the inning strong and completed the no-hitter, racking up a program-record and MCWS-record 19 strikeouts in nine innings.
The arkansas Razorbacks needed a strong pitching performance, and Wood,a projected first- or second-round MLB Draft pick, exceeded all expectations. His College World Series no-hitter is sure to boost his MLB Draft stock.
The first College World Series no-hitter was pitched by Jim Ehrler of Texas in 1950. Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State followed with another in 1960.
“I shouldn’t have hit the guy,” Wood said after the game. “That’s all I’ve gotta say.”
Asked when he knew something special was happening, Wood smiled and said, “I didn’t throw a pitch out of the stretch in a while so …”
