Google has integrated its Gemini AI models into Google Maps through a new conversational interface called Ask Maps, fundamentally changing how users interact with the navigation service. The feature transforms the mapping experience from a traditional search-and-find process into a dialogue, allowing users to ask complex questions about locations and receive personalized recommendations.

The rollout began on March 12, 2026, and is currently available to users in the United States, and India. The feature is limited to mobile devices running Android and iOS, though Google has stated that a desktop version is expected in the near future.

Conversational Exploration and Personalization

Ask Maps appears as the first tab located under the search bar. Upon tapping the tab, the app provides personalized prompt suggestions based on the user’s saved trips and prior search history. For users in San Francisco, the AI might suggest planning a trip to Muir Woods with a stop for breakfast burritos or exploring vintage stores in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood.

Conversational Exploration and Personalization

The chatbot is designed to handle nuanced queries that go beyond standard navigation. According to Miriam Daniel, VP and GM of Google Maps, users can now ask specific questions such as My phone is dying — where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee? or Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?

For long-distance travel, the tool can generate detailed itineraries. In one example provided by Google, the AI created a three-day driving plan from the Grand Canyon to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, marking lookout points and popular stops. The AI also provided specific local tips, such as recommending that visitors rent a sandboard and wax at the visitor center for better speed.

Immersive Navigation and Visual Overhauls

Alongside the conversational AI, Google is launching Immersive Navigation. This update represents the most significant navigation overhaul in more than a decade, focusing on making the driving experience more intuitive through redesigned visuals and real-time updates.

The update introduces several technical enhancements to the driving experience:

  • 3D views and redesigned visuals to provide clearer guidance.
  • Alternate route tradeoffs that allow users to compare factors such as tolls versus traffic.
  • Natural voice guidance and Street View previews of destinations.
  • Integrated parking assistance to reduce trip stress.

Strategic Integration of Gemini

The addition of Ask Maps is part of a broader corporate strategy to embed Gemini AI across the entire Google product ecosystem. This effort includes the recent addition of Gemini-powered tools to the Google Workspace suite, specifically Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Google has also previously introduced capabilities allowing Gemini to take control of select third-party apps to perform tasks, such as booking an Uber.

By integrating Gemini into Google Maps, which has more than 2 billion monthly users, Google aims to differentiate its AI from competitors and increase user retention within its own services. The company describes this shift as transforming exploration into a simple conversation by combining the most capable Gemini models with the freshest map data available.

Google Maps is fundamentally changing what a map can do. By bringing together the world’s freshest map with our most capable Gemini models, we’re transforming exploration into a simple conversation and making driving more intuitive than ever with our biggest navigation upgrade in over a decade.

Currently, the Ask Maps feature cannot be hidden or opted out of by users, aligning with the deployment pattern of other recent generative AI features across Google’s platforms.
