SAN FRANCISCO (Yonhap) — Google’s payments to Samsung Electronics for the integration of it’s gemini AI model into Samsung devices have come under scrutiny during the U.S.Justice Department’s ⁤antitrust trial.

The Justice Department,in its lawsuit alleging Google illegally monopolized the internet search market, argued in a Washington,D.C., court on July 21 that Google could leverage AI to further solidify its dominance.

“We are already seeing signs of Google strengthening its dominance, especially with its Gemini AI ⁣model,” the Justice Department stated,⁣ suggesting the payments to Samsung are part of this strategy.

Peter Fitzgerald, Google’s vice president of Platform and Device partnership, testified in court, acknowledging the ‍financial agreement with Samsung.

“Google agreed to cover ‍expenses related to the installation of Gemini AI on Samsung devices, beginning in January,” Fitzgerald said.

According to Fitzgerald, ⁢the agreement involves a fixed monthly payment for each device⁢ equipped with gemini, along with a share⁣ of advertising revenue generated through the Gemini⁢ app.

The specific amount Google pays to Samsung remains‍ confidential.

The scrutiny comes ⁢after a November ⁣2023 ruling where ⁢Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, successfully argued that Google abused its market position by forcing developers to use its in-app payment system.

Bloomberg‍ reported that these payments from Google are⁢ occurring “even though they have already⁤ been illegally judged,” referencing previous antitrust concerns.

The U.S. court had previously ruled, following the Epic Games lawsuit, that Google had ⁤paid Samsung to set Google as the ⁣default search engine on Samsung devices.

Google has dismissed the Justice Department’s concerns as “beyond the scope of⁢ the lawsuit,” maintaining that its AI initiatives do not unduly expand its search ⁣market dominance.
