Google’s AR Smart Glasses Project Restarted with New Features

Google Reportedly Resumes Development of AR Smart Glasses Project

Google has reportedly decided to revive its augmented reality (AR) smart glasses project, which was halted three months ago. Unlike competitors such as Meta or Apple, Google aims to develop an XR (mixed reality) device in the form of glasses, resembling sunglasses or goggles. The new glasses are expected to be integrated with the Google Assistant, an AI (artificial intelligence) assistant similar to Siri or Bixby, rather than focusing on XR content like games or metaverse.

According to reports from 9to5Google, a US media outlet, Google recently restarted its ‘Iris’ AR smart glasses project. The Iris project, originally unveiled in January last year, was discontinued in June due to internal disagreements over the development direction.

The latest version of the Google app for Android has revealed a new feature called ‘Google Assistant’ tagged with ‘iris’, indicating its connection to the smart glasses project. Users will be able to activate the Google Assistant by simply pressing and holding the ‘right temple’ of the glasses, much like a scene from the Iron Man movie where Tony Stark communicates with his AI assistant ‘Jarvis’ by touching his glasses. The analysis of code suggests that this function will support tasks such as making calls or setting timers.

Google’s AR smart glasses, codenamed ‘Iris’, are expected to be launched in 2025. Reports suggest that Google has been in talks with various partners, including Samsung Electronics, for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) offers since last August. It is yet to be determined if Google will develop its own hardware for the glasses or collaborate with OEMs. However, it is expected that Google and Samsung will unveil their respective solutions for XR headsets based on Android in the near future, similar to Apple’s Vision Pro or MetaQuest.

As the development progresses, it remains to be seen how Google will position itself in the competitive AR smart glasses market. However, industry experts anticipate that Google’s reentry into the space will lead to exciting advancements and offer new possibilities for users.

Instead of XR (mixed reality) content like games or metaverse, it is expected to be combined with the Google Assistant function, an AI (artificial intelligence) assistant like Siri or Bixby. Google’s challenge to develop an XR device in the form of glasses like sunglasses or goggles has begun again, rather than creating a headset type XR (mixed reality) device like Meta or Apple.

According to 9to5Google, Google’s media outlet in the United States, on the 17th (local time), it appears that Google has recently restarted its ‘Iris’ AR smart glasses project. The Iris project, which was revealed in January last year, was said to have ended last June due to internal confusion due to an inability to decide on a development direction.

As a result of 9to5Google’s analysis of the latest version of the Google app for Android, a new function called ‘Google Assistant’ with the tag ‘iris’ was identified. Google Assistant is Google’s AI (artificial intelligence) assistant, and is usually called using the voice language “Hey Google.”

With a new feature discovered by 9to5Google, users can bring up Google Assistant by pressing and holding the ‘right temple’, which corresponds to the temple of the glasses. This is similar to how Tony Stark calls his AI assistant ‘Jarvis’ by pressing his glasses in the movie Iron Man. 9to5Google explained, “You can activate Google Assistant by touching your temple on the Sony Link Buds wireless phone, but analysis results show that this function targets devices with the ‘iris_device’ attribute.” Code was also discovered that could perform common Google Assistant tasks, such as calling a saved number or setting a timer.

Google AR Glass ‘Iris’ is likely to be released in 2025. This is because it has been reported that Google has been making OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) offers to partners such as Samsung Electronics since last August with the aim of launching in 2025.

9to5Google said, “It remains to be seen whether Google will launch its own hardware for AR smart glasses or partner with OEMs,” but added, “Google and Samsung will unveil their own solutions based on on Android for XR headsets like Apple Vision Pro or MetaQuest in the coming months.” “It seems it is,” he said.
