Deposed prime minister and others are indicted for crimes against humanity, with trial set for August.
BangladeshS International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has formally indicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two senior officials on charges of crimes against humanity. The charges relate to a violent crackdown on protesters during last year’s widespread July uprising, marking a significant escalation in the political turmoil that led to Hasina’s ouster.
Hasina and Officials Face Trial
The tribunal, presided over by Justice golam Mortuza Mozumder alongside Justices Shafiul alam Masud and Mohitul Enam Chowdhury, delivered the indictment on Thursday. The trial is scheduled to commence on August 3rd, beginning with opening statements and the presentation of initial witness testimony.
Alongside Hasina, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah al-Mamun have also been indicted. While al-Mamun appeared in court and is currently in custody, both Hasina and Kamal have reportedly fled the country.
Background: The July Uprising and Previous Charges
The charges stem from the government’s response to mass demonstrations that erupted in August of last year. Critics allege that the crackdown resulted in widespread human rights abuses and hundreds of deaths. These protests, largely driven by Bangladesh’s Gen Z population, ultimately led to the end of Hasina’s 15-year rule.Hasina, currently in self-imposed exile in India, has consistently dismissed the tribunal as politically motivated. She was previously sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court by the ICT earlier this month – the first formal sentence she has received in connection with the various cases brought against her. According to Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam, this sentence will take effect should Hasina be arrested or voluntarily return to Bangladesh.
ongoing Legal Battles and Political implications
The indictment represents a dramatic turn in the ongoing legal battles surrounding Hasina’s legacy. The charges against her and her former colleagues carry significant weight, possibly leading to lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
The trial is expected to be closely watched both domestically and internationally, as it unfolds against a backdrop of political instability and concerns about human rights in Bangladesh. The outcome could have profound implications for the country’s future political landscape and its relationship with the international community.
