[디지털투데이 AI리포터] It is widely accepted that high levels of testosterone, known as the male hormone, are beneficial for men. However, research has shown that men with high testosterone levels have a higher risk of atrial fibrillation.

A research team at the Monash School of Public Health in Australia conducted follow-up observations of the relationship between testosterone and atrial fibrillation in 4,570 men with an average age of 74 years and no history of cardiovascular disease, including atrial fibrillation.

As a result of follow-up, the mean testosterone concentration in men who developed atrial fibrillation was 17 nmol/L, which was relatively higher than that in men who did not develop atrial fibrillation (15.7 nmol/L). Even if the concentration was within the normal range, men whose concentrations were at the upper end of the range had a higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation. This was true even after controlling for smoking history.

Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia, a disease in which the heartbeat becomes irregular. While it does not immediately pose as serious a life threat as myocardial infarction, caution is needed as the risk of stroke also increases as symptoms become more frequent.

When atrial fibrillation occurs, symptoms such as heart palpitations and difficulty breathing mainly appear. In severe cases, it can lead to lethargy and fainting.

Testosterone generally begins to decline each year in your mid to late 30s, and symptoms of male hormone deficiency appear as you age. The research team emphasized: “It is important to maintain testosterone levels within the normal range, and even within the range, it is important to maintain adequate levels.”

The results of this study were published in the June issue of the international academic journal The Lancet.
