Hyosung TNC Leads the Market with Eco-Friendly Fibers Made from Discarded Plastic Bottles

Hyosung TNC: Transforming Discarded Plastic Bottles into Fashionable Items

Hyosung TNC, a leading fashion company, has found a unique way to contribute to the environment by creating clothes, bags, and sneakers using fibers extracted from discarded plastic bottles. Their flagship eco-friendly fiber, known as ‘Regen’, aims to enhance the company’s competitiveness in both the domestic and foreign markets.

The production process for ‘Regen’ yarn begins by washing the transparent PET bottles thoroughly before converting them into chips. These chips are then used to create the threads that form the fabric. Hyosung TNC embarked on developing eco-friendly fibers in the early 2000s and introduced ‘Regen’ in 2008.

The manufacturing of products using ‘Regen’ yarns is diverse. For example, sneakers require approximately 11 500mL PET bottles, while a bag utilizes 16 and a shirt incorporates 27 PET bottles. The most notable feature of these items is their eco-friendliness. In recognition of its sustainability efforts, ‘Regen’ yarn received the world’s first global recycling standard (GRS) certification from the acclaimed eco-friendly certification body, Control Union. This certification has attracted attention for its positive impact on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Kim Seong-guk, the PET Foreign Sales Team PM at Hyosung TNC, highlights another advantage of ‘Regen’ by stating, “When Regen Polyester is produced instead of regular polyester, the amount of CO2 reduced per ton is equal to the amount absorbed by approximately 280 30-year-old pine trees in one year.” In addition to its eco-friendliness, ‘Regen’ yarn offers various functions such as coolness, durability, antibacterial properties, elasticity, and breathability.

Hyosung TNC collaborates with renowned companies like Pleatsmama, Dax, and GoSphere to produce fashion items using ‘Regen’. The company’s commitment extends beyond fashion, as they also supply workwear to major corporations like Samsung Electronics and POSCO Gwangyang Works.

Notably, Hyosung TNC recently completed the expansion of a facility for ‘Regen Ocean Nylon’ at the end of last year. This fiber is made by recycling waste fishing nets collected from both domestic and international sources. The company intends to significantly expand its production of ‘Regen Ocean Nylon’, further solidifying its dedication to eco-friendly manufacturing.

With a focus on developing innovative eco-friendly fibers like ‘Regen’ yarn and ‘Regen Ocean Nylon’, Hyosung TNC aims to take the lead in the market. This environmentally conscious initiative reflects the company’s vision for sustainable fashion and sets an example for the industry. This is Park Na-yeon reporting for Pax Economy TV.
