‘I was overconfident’: Misbah about that scoop shot in the final Misbah-ul-Haq

Islamabad ടം Winning the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup on South African soil in 2007 was one of the golden moments in the history of Indian cricket. The Dhoni-led Indian team clinched their maiden title by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. Joginder Sharma, who bowled in the last over, handed over Pakistan batsman Misbah-ul-Haq to Sreesanth at a time when Indian cricket fans were always ‘thrilled’.

Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq’s reaction to his batting 14 years later has revived the first Twenty20 World Cup final. Misbah revealed that he tried the scoop shot that day because of ‘overconfidence’. Misbah-ul-Haq talks to his teammates Shuaib Akhtar and Mohammad Yousuf about their defeat in the 2007 World Cup final against India.

‘In 2007 I played scoop shots in every game and scored several boundaries. Despite having a fielder in the fine leg, I took singles when I played that shot against Australia. Against the spinners, that shot was a success. So I can say that I was overconfident in the final. The timing of that shot was wrong, “said Misbah.

In the final, India captain MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Gautam Gambhir (75 off 54 balls) scored 157 for five in 20 overs with a half-century. In reply, RP Singh and Irfan Pathan put the Pakistani batsmen ahead but Misbah-ul-Haq, who stood firm on one side, gave Pakistan hope of victory.

Pakistan were 13 runs short in the final over. Dhoni also handed over the ball to Joginder Sharma. With the first ball wide, Pakistan scored a run. He needs 12 runs off six balls. Next is the ball dot ball. But in the second ball, Joginder’s full toss Misbah hit a six. With that, the Indian fans were under a lot of pressure. Concerns about losing the title at the last minute. But Misbah, who attempted a scoop shot in the third ball, missed the mark. Sreesanth hits the ball in the short final leg to help India win the Twenty20 World Cup!
