Mumbai: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant be appointed as India’s new Test captain. Gavaskar says the captain’s job is to make the ball more responsible and better. Gavaskar was referring to Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Gavaskar says Rohit has become a more responsible player and a better batsman since he became the Mumbai captain.

With the resignation of Virat Kohli, Rohit may be India’s new Test captain. Rohit is currently India’s Twenty20 and ODI captain. He was the vice-captain of the Test team for the tour of South Africa but was ruled out of the series due to injury. While Rohit will be the captain, Rahul will be the vice-captain. Rohit will make his Test debut in the series against Sri Lanka in India.

Kohli vacated the captaincy of the Test team last day. Kohli can no longer be seen as the captain of Team India in all three formats. Kohli has led India to the most number of Tests and most victories. India have won 40 of the 68 Tests led by Kohli.

Kohli became the Indian captain in 2015 after the resignation of MS Dhoni. The 33-year-old Kohli has scored 5864 runs from 113 innings with 20 centuries since becoming captain. The highest score was 254 not out.

Kohli, who joined the BCCI on September 21, announced his retirement from the Twenty20 captaincy after the World Cup. Following this, on December 8, Kohli was removed as the captain of the ODI team.
