Jakarta – In a significant escalation of trade tensions, former US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% additional tariff on goods originating from India, bringing the total tariff to 50% due to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil. The move signals a firm stance against countries continuing trade with Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical pressures.
Trump’s Executive order and Rationale
According to an executive order issued on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, and reported by CNBC International, Trump cited India’s direct and indirect imports of Russian oil as the justification for the increased tariffs.
“I found that the Indian government is currently directly or indirectly importing oil from Russia,” the executive order stated. “Therefore, and in accordance with applicable law, goods from India imported to the United States will be subject to an additional import duty tariff of 25%.”
The new tariffs will take effect 21 days after August 7th, building upon an existing 25% tariff already in place. This effectively makes the tariff on Indian goods among the highest levied by the US on any of its trading partners.
Diplomatic Context and US-Russia Relations
The imposition of the tariff coincides with a meeting between Trump’s special messenger, Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. this meeting occurred shortly before a deadline set by Trump for Russia to implement a ceasefire in Ukraine.
A White House official indicated the meeting progressed positively and that the threatened tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil were anticipated to be implemented on Friday. This suggests a direct link between the diplomatic efforts with Russia and the economic pressure being applied to India.
India’s Response and Concerns
India has expressed regret over the US decision, framing it as a move solely motivated by domestic US interests. A spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India’s import decisions are driven by market factors and the necessity of ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens.”The fact that our imports are based on market factors and are carried out with the aim of ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion Indian population. We reiterate that this action is unfair, unreasonable, and unjustified,” the ministry stated. The substantial tariff increase raises concerns about the potential impact on bilateral trade relations between the US and India, and the broader implications for global energy markets. It also highlights the increasing willingness of the US to utilize economic leverage to influence geopolitical outcomes.
