The discovery of interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has provided astronomers with a rare glimpse into the formation conditions of distant star systems, revealing that its origin point was significantly colder than the environment that formed our own solar system.

First detected in July 2025 by the ATLAS survey in Chile, 3I/ATLAS is only the third confirmed interstellar object observed passing through our solar system. Its trajectory, which brings it no closer than 1.8 astronomical units to Earth, confirms it will exit the solar system permanently, posing no risk to our planet.

Analysis of the comet’s composition using radio telescope observations revealed an exceptionally high concentration of deuterium, a heavy isotope of hydrogen, in its water molecules. This “heavy water” content is approximately 30 times greater than that found in comets originating within our solar system, serving as a chemical fingerprint of the cold, distant environment where the comet formed.

Scientists from the University of Michigan, using the ALMA observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, determined that the deuterium enrichment indicates 3I/ATLAS originated in a region of space that was markedly colder and less influenced by stellar heating than the protoplanetary disk surrounding the young Sun. This suggests the comet’s parent star formed in isolation, without the competitive gravitational and thermal effects of nearby stellar nurseries.
