KAGOSHIMA, Japan-The Japanese coast guard,⁣ along with its counterparts ‌from⁢ the United States and⁢ the Philippines, conducted a joint maritime exercise Friday. ‍The drill underscores⁤ growing defense cooperation among‍ the three⁢ Pacific nations amid concerns​ about China’s⁢ increasing ‌maritime activities in⁢ the region. The exercise, held‌ off Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan, involved 350 personnel. Scenarios ‌included a‍ vessel collision, a fire, and rescuing crew ⁤members who had fallen ⁤overboard. The joint drill focused on‌ enhancing the interoperability and⁢ coordination⁤ in maritime⁣ security operations.

The joint exercise ⁣follows Japan’s confirmation that two Chinese ‍aircraft ‍carriers⁢ operated together in the Pacific earlier this month. tensions flared recently when ​Japan ​accused a Chinese fighter jet⁣ of ⁤flying too close to a Japanese reconnaissance plane, prompting mutual accusations between Tokyo ⁢and ​Beijing.
