The actual shooting scene of the Navy’s next-generation Aegis destroyer King Jeongjo has been revealed for the first time. The results of the firing were positive, including 5-inch naval guns that could attack and defend at the same time and machine guns that intercepted missiles.

On the 28th, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries released a video on its official YouTube channel titled “First Public Release of King Jeongjo Shooting Location, God’s Shield Annihilating the Enemy.”

King Jeongjo was independently designed and built domestically and is the Korean Navy’s first 8,200-ton Aegis destroyer. Aegis is the latest naval combat system developed by the United States Navy, derived from “Aegis”, the armor worn by Zeus in Greek mythology. The previous King Sejong was capable of detecting and tracking ballistic missiles, but was not equipped with interceptor missiles, while King Jeongjo is capable of hitting anti-aircraft targets such as ballistic missiles up to 400 km away.

The King Jeongjo, which is currently undergoing testing and evaluation with the Navy, recently conducted a practice firing range. Field firing is a procedure that tests whether the weapon system is functioning properly in conjunction with the Aegis system, and goes beyond simple operation to verify that it is operating at maximum efficiency.

During field shooting, it was verified that the automatic cannon-type close defense weapon system called “Phalence CIWS” was functioning properly. When an enemy missile penetrates various defense systems and approaches King Jeongjo, an automatic cannon equipped with an advanced radar system automatically tracks and intercepts the missile. It fires 20mm projectiles at a rate of 4,500 rounds per minute.

The buoy that was to be the target was floated on the sea and a multi-function phased array radar jamming the enemy system transmitted very high power electromagnetic waves to track the target. The CIWS projectile hit the target accurately, creating a spray of water.

However, before the CIWS can demonstrate its power, the enemy must first destroy King Jeongjo’s defense system. One of them is a 5-inch naval gun. It is a multipurpose aerial gun optimized for warships that serves as a means of defense for ships and can hit a variety of targets.

The shells were moved to the ship’s guns by an automatic loading device according to the radio signal. Then, they precisely aimed at the target using the Aegis system and began the attack. All 60 shells were successfully fired that day.

Chief Sergeant Lee Do-won, a member of King Jeongjo the Great’s crew, said: “Based on today’s successful performance, we will work hard to ensure that King Jeongjo the Great can become a powerful force in protecting the oceans of our country.”

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has started construction of the second ship after King Jeongjo, the first ship of the “Next Generation Aegis Destroyer (Gwanggaeto-III Batch-II)” series. The King Jeongjo is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in the second half of this year. The second ship held a groundbreaking ceremony on the 12th, and the construction of the third ship is scheduled for the end of this year.

The second next-generation Aegis destroyer will be launched next year, will undergo test operations starting in 2025 and will be delivered to the Navy in late 2026. Once deployed, it is expected to become a key maritime air and missile defense force (KAMD) as it can respond to a variety of threats, including ballistic missile detection, tracking and interception.
