Korean Film Industry Takes a Leap with Generative AI: First Film Production Entirely AI-Generated

The Domestic Film Industry Embraces Generative AI in Film Production

The domestic film industry in Korea has recently turned to generative artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the process of film production. In a groundbreaking collaboration, a large-scale multiplex has partnered with a generative AI company to create an entire film using AI technology. This marks the first instance in Korea where a film produced with generative AI will be released in a major multiplex.

Wayne Hills Bryant AI Leading the Way

Wayne Hills Bryant AI, a company specializing in AI video production, unveiled a 1-minute and 16-second trailer on YouTube. The trailer introduces Korea’s first science fiction film generated entirely by AI technology.

The film, titled “Artificial Intelligence New Cinema Movie,” is an omnibus drama trilogy set in space. Each episode is approximately 20 minutes long.

What sets this film apart is that it utilizes AI to generate everything, including the screenplay, video footage, audio, images, and subtitles. The recently released trailer seamlessly showcases the main character’s space adventure, complete with dialogue and narration.

Wayne Hills, the visionary behind the film, expressed his excitement, saying, “While there have been previous attempts at creating videos using generative AI, this is the first time a film with a compelling story has been produced solely with AI technology. It’s a significant achievement.”

The main storyline of the film was developed in collaboration with a domestic multiplex company. The film is scheduled to have a large-scale preview screening for an audience of 1,000 to 3,000 before its official release.

Q&A with Wayne Hills CEO Lee Soo-min

We had the opportunity to speak with Wayne Hills CEO Lee Soo-min to gain further insights into the film and the impact of generative AI on the industry:

Q: What significance does the publication of this film hold?

A: “This film represents a meaningful step towards revolutionizing the traditional media industry through the utilization of productive AI. Unlike previous displays of technological prowess, this film showcases AI’s potential as a tool for innovation.”

While other films have experimented with productive AI, this production uniquely marks the first time such a commercial project will be screened in a major multiplex.

Although I am not at liberty to disclose the name of the collaborating multiplex, an official announcement will be made shortly. They are currently organizing a large-scale preview and planning to release the film to an audience of 1,000 to 3,000 people.

Q: How has the multiplex industry responded to this film?

A: “The multiplex industry has faced considerable challenges due to the pandemic, with their revenue heavily reliant on blockbuster films. Recognizing the need for innovative approaches, they have chosen to collaborate with us.”

The film was produced based on a screenplay provided by the multiplex. Additionally, Wayne Hills has already produced more than 60 movies using productive AI. In the future, multiplexes will serve as more than just venues for screening films; they will also be sources of revenue through productive AI.

Q: Are there any quality concerns regarding films made with generative AI?

A: “The production of each 20-minute episode took roughly an hour. Naturally, not everyone might initially appreciate it.”

However, Wayne Hills is confident in the world-class quality of their technology and business. They offer various solutions, including ‘TTV,’ a tool that automatically translates text into video. Moreover, Wayne Hills has received numerous domestic and international accolades, such as the ‘Edison Award 2023.’

With our technology, we can accurately transform ideas into visual representations. We firmly believe that the film industry will undergo a true revolution when there is no longer a distinction between AI-generated and human-made images.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: “We are committed to aggressively transforming the industry landscape and going beyond merely ‘assisting’ the industry with productive AI.”

To achieve this goal, we will expand our AI film production service, ‘Wayne Hills Matrix AI,’ to create productive AI-based content not only in movies but also in various fields like music videos, blockchain, and digital twins.

In addition to providing AI video production tools to movie theaters, our aim is to integrate productive AI throughout the video industry and foster a culture that generates profits through this technology.

The domestic film industry has started using generative artificial intelligence (AI) in film production.

In particular, interest is growing recently as a large-scale multiplex collaborates with a generative AI company to conduct a large-scale project where the entire process of film production is carried out with generative AI. It is expected to be the first case in Korea to produce a film with productive AI and release it in a large multiplex.

Wayne Hills Bryant AI (CEO Lee Su-min), a company specializing in AI video production, released a 1 minute and 16 second trailer video on YouTube on the 6th, saying it was the first in Korea to produce a film science fiction based on the generation of AI.

The film produced by this company with productive AI is ‘Artificial Intelligence New Cinema Movie’. It is an omnibus drama trilogy set in space. It consists of 3 episodes of approximately 20 minutes.

The feature of this film is that it was produced using AI to generate everything from the scenario to video, audio, image and subtitles. In the trailer video released on YouTube this time, the story of the main character going on an adventure in a spaceship was naturally connected with lines and narrative.

Wayne Hills, who began producing the film, said, “There have been many attempts to produce videos with generative AI, but this is the first time a film with a perfect story has been completed with only AI technology.” It’s differentiated in that it’s a specific film.”

In particular, the main story was produced in collaboration with a domestic multiplex company, and plans to screen it in multiplexes after a large-scale preview of 1,000 to 3,000 people were also revealed.

The following is a question and answer session with Sumin Lee, CEO of Wayne Hills.

– To give meaning to the publication of this film
▲ I think it is very meaningful that this will be the first step to innovate the current old media industry with productive AI, not a performance to show technology like in the past.

There have been many cases of making a film with productive AI, but this is probably the first time in the world that a commercial production like this has been screened at a large multiplex.

Although the name cannot be revealed due to the agreement, there will be an official announcement from the multiplex company soon. I understand they are preparing for a large scale preview and official release with 1,000 to 3,000 people.

– What is the reaction of the multiplex industry?
▲ The multiplex industry, which has only been watching blockbuster films through the pandemic, is in a very difficult situation. I understand that they promote collaboration with us because they believe that there are no innovations in traditional business methods.

This film was produced based on the scenario provided by the multiplex. In addition to this, more than 60 movies have been made with productive AI. In the future, multiplexes will serve more than just a place to screen movies. Making money directly from productive AI is also a goal for every business.

– Are there any quality issues with movies made with generative AI?
▲ It only took about an hour to produce each of the three 20 minute episodes. Of course, you may not like it at first.

However, Wayne Hills is confident that its technology and business are world class. It has several solutions, including ‘TTV’, which automatically converts input text to video. There are also a number of domestic and international awards such as the ‘Edison Award 2023’.

We have prepared technology to accurately implement ideas in people’s heads into images, and I believe that a true revolution in the film industry will occur when there is no longer a distinction between man-made images.

– Plans for the future
▲ It plans to continue aggressive efforts to ‘change the landscape of the industry’ without stopping at the level of ‘helping’ the industry with productive AI.

To this end, it plans to expand its AI film production service ‘Wayne Hills Matrix AI’. It aims to produce productive AI-based content not only in movies but also in various fields such as music videos, blockchain, and digital twins.

Going beyond providing AI video production tools to movie theaters, we will spread productive AI throughout the video industry and create a structure and culture that raises profits through this.
