Bogotá (AP) — The former Capo of the Medellín Cartel, Carlos Lehder, who arrived in Colombia more than 30 years after being extradited, remained on Saturday awaiting a judge’s decision regarding his legal situation after being taken into police custody upon his arrival, his defense said.
Lehder, 75, arrived on Friday in Bogotá from Frankfurt, Germany, and planned to continue his journey to Medellín. He was required to address outstanding judicial matters.
His lawyer, Sondra Maccollins, told The Associated Press that the capture order issued in 2017 “is without validity” and that a 24-year jail sentence issued decades ago for drug trafficking and illegal carrying of arms, from which the prison order is derived, “is prescribed.”
Maccollins stated that a judge must define the legality of her client’s retention in a hearing, “as there are no pending causes. We hope to resolve his legal situation in the next few days.”
Lehder, a former leader of the Medellín Cartel, which dominated world cocaine traffic in the 1980s, served a lengthy sentence for drug trafficking in a United States prison until 2020, when he was released and deported to Germany, a country where he obtained citizenship through his father.
