British politician Peter Mandelson is stepping down from the House of Lords following renewed scrutiny over his relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and as police review allegations he may have passed sensitive government information to Epstein. The resignation, announced on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, comes after the release of a substantial trove of documents related to Epstein’s crimes.

Lord Mandelson, 72, informed the speaker of the House of Lords, Michael Forsyth, of his intention to resign, with the move taking effect on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The decision follows mounting pressure stemming from the newly released US Department of Justice files, which detail a long-running connection between Mandelson, and Epstein.

The documents reportedly include emails exchanged between the two men, with Mandelson allegedly sharing political insights and, critically, market-sensitive information during the 2008 financial crisis. This has prompted accusations that Mandelson may have breached confidentiality rules and potentially broken the law. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is reviewing a number of reports relating to alleged misconduct in public office to determine if a criminal investigation is warranted.

Commander Ella Marriott of the Metropolitan Police stated the reports will be reviewed to ascertain whether they “meet the criminal threshold for investigation.” The police action follows calls from opposition politicians, including Labour MP Dame Emily Thornberry, for a criminal prosecution.

The fallout has also reached the highest levels of the British government. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, according to a Downing Street readout of a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday, expressed his dismay at the revelations and ordered the cabinet secretary to investigate Mandelson’s contacts with Epstein while he served as a cabinet minister. Starmer reportedly told his cabinet he was “appalled by the information” and concerned that further details might emerge.

The Prime Minister also indicated he is considering legislation to strip Mandelson of his peerage, a move that would be unprecedented since the First World War. New powers could be granted to remove peers who bring the House of Lords into disrepute, and Mandelson would be the first to face such action if the legislation is passed.

Mandelson preempted this potential move by resigning from the Labour Party on Sunday, February 1, 2026, stating he did so to avoid causing “further embarrassment” to the party. He had previously served as a minister in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown between 1997 and 2010.

The released files also contain bank documents suggesting financial transfers from Epstein to accounts linked to Mandelson or his partner, Reinaldo Avila da Silva. Mandelson has stated he does not recall these transactions and intends to review the documents to understand their nature.

Adding to the controversy, the Epstein files include an image of Mandelson in his underwear alongside an unidentified woman at Epstein’s Paris flat. Mandelson has said he has no recollection of the circumstances surrounding the photograph, stating he “cannot place the location or the woman.”

Mandelson briefly served as the UK’s ambassador to the United States last year before being removed from the post in September following initial reports of his links to Epstein. His appointment as ambassador had already been met with criticism due to his past associations with the convicted sex offender.

In a recent interview with The Times, Mandelson described Epstein as a “master manipulator” and acknowledged having experienced “a lot of bad luck, no doubt some of it of my own making.”

The revelations come as the US Department of Justice released approximately three million pages of documents from the case files relating to Jeffrey Epstein on Friday, January 30, 2026. The release has triggered a wave of scrutiny regarding the relationships between Epstein and numerous high-profile individuals, raising questions about potential complicity and failures to address his crimes.

The situation has also prompted a broader discussion about the ethical responsibilities of individuals in positions of power and the importance of holding them accountable for their associations and actions. The cabinet secretary’s investigation will focus on whether Mandelson’s contacts with Epstein compromised government safeguards and potentially endangered national interests.

Further revelations in the Epstein files have also touched upon other prominent figures, including members of the British royal family. An email purportedly from Sarah, Duchess of York, expressed concerns about the potential repercussions of her association with Epstein, stating, “No woman has ever left the royal family with her head, and they cannot behead me, therefore they will discredit me.”
