March 27, 2023 Ceres opposes Coma Berenices – AstroArts

On March 27, 2023, the dwarf planet Ceres will be in opposition (Sun-Earth-Ceres alignment) in the constellation Coma Berenices.

Dwarf planet Ceres, located in the constellation Coma Berenices, visible in the eastern night sky, will be in opposition on March 27. This is the time when the Sun-Earth-Ceres conjunction -go and be visible all night.

It has a brightness of about 7th magnitude and can be seen with binoculars or a small astronomical telescope if the sky is dark. Look for Denebola, a second-magnitude star in the nearby constellation of Leo, as a landmark. It is located right near the Virgo galaxy cluster, and if you take a picture of it every few days, you can see how it moves through the group of galaxies.

Ceres is located in the “asteroid belt” between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and is known as “the big four asteroids” along with Pallas, Juno and Vesta. Asteroid number 1, discovered in 1801, is the largest in the asteroid belt with a diameter of about 940 km (average). In 2006, it was classified as a dwarf planet along with Pluto.
