Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is pivoting away from the metaverse and toward artificial intelligence, believing AI will become the next major media format and transform social feeds into more immersive and interactive experiences. Zuckerberg outlined this shift during Meta’s earnings call on Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
Zuckerberg frames this change as a natural progression in how people consume content online. He explained that social media has evolved from primarily text-based platforms to incorporating photos with the advent of camera phones, and then to video as mobile networks improved. Now, he predicts AI will unlock entirely new, immersive, and interactive media formats.
According to Zuckerberg, “We started with text, and then moved to photos when we got phones with cameras, and then moved to video when mobile networks got fast enough. Soon, we’ll see an explosion of new media formats that are more immersive and interactive, and only possible because of advances in AI.”
Implications for meta’s Future
This strategic shift suggests Meta is significantly increasing its investment in AI research and development. While the company continues to work on metaverse technologies, the emphasis appears to be on integrating AI into its core social media platforms – Facebook and Instagram – to enhance user engagement and create new advertising opportunities. Meta reported a 13% increase in daily active users across its family of apps in Q4 2023, reaching 3.07 billion on average.
The Metaverse’s Diminishing Role
The metaverse, once touted as the future of social interaction by Zuckerberg, now appears to be taking a backseat. Meta’s reality Labs division, responsible for metaverse development, reported a $6.1 billion loss in 2023, according to the company’s financial statements released on February 1, 2024. This significant loss, coupled with the renewed focus on AI, signals a recalibration of Meta’s long-term strategy.
