Two Guatemalan pilots and a Mexican agronomist died Friday when their plane crashed in southern Mexico, near Tapachula. The team was releasing sterile flies as part of a programme to combat the spread of screwworm,a parasite affecting cattle.
The Agriculture Ministry of Mexico confirmed the crash, but did not specify the cause. The incident occured as Mexico intensified its screwworm control measures, a move prompted by concerns from the United States government.
The United states had previously suspended cattle imports from Mexico due to fears about the pest. President Claudia Sheinbaum noted that U.S. specialists were in Mexico evaluating the country’s screwworm eradication efforts, but did not indicate when the import suspension might be lifted.
