It is reported that Microsoft (MS) has started testing Start Menu ads for Windows 11 beta testers.

According to foreign media, on the 14th (local time), it was confirmed that an advertisement has been added to the Start menu of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.3495, which was recently distributed to beta testers in the United States.

“Building on recent improvements, such as grouping recently installed apps and showing frequently used apps, Recommendations in the Start menu now tries to provide recommendations to help you find great apps in the MS Store,” Microsoft said in the release notes will only be visible to Windows Insiders in the US beta channel and will not apply to commercial devices,” he said.

He added: “We regularly test new environments and concepts that may not be released via Windows Insider and receive feedback,” suggesting that if tester feedback is positive, advertising could be introduced in the final version.

However, Microsoft is aware of the backlash from ad-sensitive users and offers an option to manually turn off ads in the Start menu. You can turn off Start menu ads by going to Settings > Personalization > Start and turning off the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more” toggle.
