Ministry of Public Health Partners with Network to Promote Women’s Cancer Care

The Ministry of Public Health has joined forces with government and private network partners to launch a campaign for women’s cancer care. Under the slogan “Beautiful, Brilliant, Fighting Cancer,” the initiative aims to reduce illness and death caused by cancer. The comprehensive cancer policy includes promotion, prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as palliative care for patients. With a focus on reducing the rate of cancer-related illness and death, the campaign plans to vaccinate 1 million women aged 11 to 20 with the HPV vaccine nationwide.

In an effort to further enhance women’s cancer care, an open meeting titled “Improving Women’s Cancer Care: The Thai Women’s Cancer Policy Forum” was held today at the Centara Grand Hotel and Bangkok Convention Center at CentralWorld. The meeting brought together key figures such as Dr. Chonnan Srikaew, Minister of Public Health, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, Assistant Professor Dr. Tavida Kamonwet, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, Dr. Amporn Benjaphonpitak, Acting Director General of the Department of Medical Services, and Dr. Jadej Thamthatcharee, Secretary General of the National Health Security Office. These representatives from the Ministry of Public Health and partner agencies collaborated to discuss and strengthen women’s cancer policy and opportunities for improved care.

Dr. Chonnan Srikaew emphasized the significance of addressing cancer as a crucial public health concern in Thailand, particularly breast and cervical cancer, which are prevalent among Thai women. The National Cancer Institute’s statistics reveal an alarming number of new cases and deaths annually. To tackle this issue, the Ministry of Public Health has established the “Comprehensive Cancer” policy, which encompasses various aspects of cancer care and aims to provide holistic support to patients. As part of the Quick Win initiative, the Ministry plans to vaccinate 1 million women aged 11 to 20 against HPV within the first 100 days. This vaccination campaign will commence nationwide in November 2023. Additionally, efforts are being made to develop the healthcare system for cancer, ensuring comprehensive coverage and effective care for all.

Underlining the significance of Breast Cancer Prevention Month, Dr. Chonnan Srikaew highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Public Health, government, private sector, and associations to combat breast cancer. The meeting served as a platform to disseminate crucial information regarding prevention and screening for breast and cervical cancer, urging women to be vigilant about early symptoms. Experts from various organizations shared insights on new measures and methods to enhance cancer control. The event also featured activities such as cervical cancer screenings for women aged 35 and above, breast cancer screenings conducted by specialists, and free mammogram screenings for high-risk individuals. A booth provided information on breast and cervical cancer, aligning with the campaign’s empowering slogans, “Beautiful, Brilliant, Fight Cancer” and “Women Power No Cancer.”

A report titled “Impacts and Opportunities: Investments and Urgent Actions Needed” highlights the progress Thailand has made in terms of cancer surveillance and prevention. However, challenges remain in areas such as access to screening, treatment, resource allocation, and budgeting for women’s cancer care. Addressing these challenges is vital in improving the quality of life for women and patients, while significantly reducing morbidity and mortality rates associated with breast and cervical cancer in Thailand. The report suggests five important opportunities for further advancements in cancer prevention, including disease prevention through immunization and vaccination, systematic screening programs, expanding the health workforce, increasing access to treatment, and involving patient organizations in cancer management plans.

As the Ministry of Public Health takes proactive steps to combat cancer, their partnership with network organizations continues to play a pivotal role in achieving comprehensive and effective women’s cancer care in Thailand.
