CHISINAU (Reuters) – The Moldovan government has denied Russian media reports that Ukraine plans to launch a false flag campaign to invade the pro-Russian region of Transnistria in eastern Moldova, calling on the people to remain calm.

Russian news agency RIA, citing the Russian defense ministry, claimed that Ukraine was planning a false flag campaign disguised as an attack by Russian troops from Transnistria as a pretext for the invasion.

The Moldovan government said on the messaging app Telegram that it “does not confirm” the claims of the Russian defense ministry.

“We call for a calm response. We also encourage Moldova to get information from official and credible sources,” he said.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said last week that Moldova would be the next target for Russia after it invaded Ukraine.
