[Johannesburg, 25th Reuters]–South African experts announced on the 25th that they have detected a small number of new mutants of the new coronavirus.

This mutant is called “B.1.1.259” and has a “very rare” mutation that can evade the body’s immune response and increase infectivity.

Initial information from medical institutions shows that the mutant is rapidly spreading in Gauteng, which has the largest population in the country. The other eight states may have already been infected.

About 100 cases were confirmed in South Africa. It has also been confirmed in Botswana and Hong Kong. According to researchers, 90% of new infections in Gauteng could be infected with this mutant.
