New NPB Seibu Infielder Jesús Aguilar Praised by GM Watanabe for Home Runs and Soft Defense

GM Watanabe called Aguilar’s hitting “home runs in every direction” and his defense was “very soft.”

On the 20th, Seibu general manager Hisanobu Watanabe praised new foreign infielder Jesús Aguilar, whose acquisition was announced on the same day, saying, “He is a good hitter who can hit home runs in any direction.” While he has high expectations as a long-range gun who boasts a track record of 114 home runs and 402 RBIs in 795 games played in the major leagues, he has also received high praise for his defensive ability.

Aguilar is 190 cm tall and weighs 125 kg. GM Watanabe said, “He’s very soft for his size. I think first base is the longest on defense. It’s very good. I haven’t seen it all on video, but the pitcher moves from side to side and from grounders to first base.” basic (cover the bases). His throws were also stable, both from above and below (toss). Just by looking at it, I can tell it’s different than a normal first big ball.

He then listed the names of his assistants who were active on both offense and defense in Japan, saying, “Boomer and Cabrera were also really good. I think they’re that guy.” Boomer was a member of Hankyu and Orix from 1983 to 1991, and in 1992 he played for Daiei (currently Softbank), where he was the leadoff hitter twice, the home run leader once, and the RBI leader four times. He has twice won the Golden Glove Award in the first base category.

Cabrera played for 12 years with three teams, including Seibu. In 2002, he hit 55 home runs in a season, which at the time was a tied record in professional baseball, and was the home run champion and RBI champion once each. He also won the 2008 Golden Glove Award in the first base category.

Both Boomer and Cabrera had below-average batting records, so when asked if Aguilar was a super helper, GM Watanabe said with a wry smile, “I don’t really know. I won’t say much.” However, he continued, “he IS an attractive batsman.”

“We’re missing a piece. Given the way we played this year, it was difficult to recover if we scored first. With Cordero (already announced as a signing) he can change the atmosphere with just one move. The fans have high expectations for me, and I hope that’s the case. If I hit well, I think I’ll be popular.” Since Yamakawa, a long-range gunslinger, exercised his free agency rights and moved to Softbank, expectations are high for both of them the assistants.
