North Korea launched a surprise ballistic missile into the East Sea in the middle of the night on the 30th.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on the 30th that “North Korea launched an unknown ballistic missile into the East Sea.”

The military is analyzing detailed specifications such as the type and flight distance of the missile.

It is interpreted that North Korea’s provocation was aimed at the ‘Eulji Freedom Shield’ (UFS · Ulchi Freedom Shield), a joint South Korea-US exercise that will be held from the 21st to the 31st.

In particular, it appears to be a repulsive provocation against South Korea and the US conducting a joint air drill to deploy US B-1B strategic bombers to the Korean Peninsula over the Yellow Sea on this day.

The B-1B was also deployed on the Korean Peninsula in response to North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) provocations in March and February.

The B-1B, also known as the “swan of death,” can fly up to 11,998 km at a maximum speed of Mach 1.25. If forward deployed to Guam in the Pacific Ocean, it can be deployed to the Korean Peninsula within two hours. This strategic bomber can be equipped with up to 57t ordnance. It is characterized by a superior armament than other strategic bombers such as the B-2 (22t) or B-52 (31t).

It has been 37 days since North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the East Sea on the 24th of last month.
