Federal agents arrested a 35-year-old OpenAI engineer and charged him with planting a hidden audio recording device inside an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco headquarters, the U.S. Department of Justice announced. Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national, was taken into custody on October 9, 2026, according to federal prosecutors. The case, reported by Reuters, highlights heightened corporate security concerns as artificial intelligence firms race to protect proprietary research and superintelligence technology.
Discovery of the Conference Room Device and Internal Investigation
OpenAI discovered the covert recording device on September 30, 2026, during a security sweep conducted by its technical surveillance countermeasures team, according to Fox Business and the Department of Justice. The thumb-sized apparatus featured a microphone, was capable of connecting to a camera, and had been plugged into a USB port on the back of a television in a room used for highly confidential discussions. Prosecutors stated that the device had been installed on or about September 28, 2026, concealed inside toilet paper, and that its stored data was encrypted and inaccessible when found.
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re…
OpenAI announced in a post on X that it used its internal AI models to trace the origins of the hardware and identify the person responsible, Reuters reported. The company stated that it found evidence the employee intended to place additional recording devices in sensitive office areas. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data,
OpenAI stated, adding that the employee was promptly terminated and the matter referred to the FBI.
Federal Charges and Prior Surveillance Activities
Alfozan has been charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, according to the Department of Justice and Fox Business. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the engineer allegedly sought to secretly capture sensitive communications concerning superintelligence technology. Court documents show that Alfozan had used an AI chatbot and productivity agent for about a month leading up to September 16, 2026, to research building addresses, meeting-room capacities, calendars, and executive locations.

According to CNBC and Fox Business, surveillance footage captured Alfozan near the conference room on multiple days without authorization, including entering the room on October 5, 2026, and looking behind the television. On that same day, OpenAI security personnel opened an unattended bag left in another part of the building and discovered Alfozan’s wallet, identification, and a second, similar recording device.
Professional Background and Legal Proceedings
Alfozan had worked as an engineer at OpenAI since July 2025, according to the Justice Department. CNBC reported that he is also listed as a venture partner at Raed Ventures, a Riyadh-headquartered venture capital firm, and previously held roles at Meta, Microsoft, and SAP, having studied computer science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been a legal permanent resident of the United States since September 2020.
