Organizations are calling for demonstrations

After attacks on politicians, organizations call for spontaneous demonstrations. There will be rallies in Berlin and Dresden.

Two organizations have called for spontaneous demonstrations at the Brandenburg Gate and Dresden’s Pohlandplatz this Sunday. The background is the violent attacks on politicians on Friday and Saturday. “Violence has no place in our democracy” says the message from the group “Together against the right” and “We are the Firewall Dresden” on Instagram.

In Berlin, people should take to the streets at 6 p.m., in Dresden the event should start at 5 p.m. “Together, as a democratic civil society, we take a stand. Nobody should have to fear for their safety because they are politically involved or active in a party!” says the call, which received almost 1,000 likes (as of 1:30 a.m.) within a short period of time. “Together Against the Right” is, according to its own statements, a “nationwide network against AfD and right-wing extremism”, “We are the Firewall Dresden” sees itself as a non-partisan action alliance of civil society.

On Friday there was an attack on the SPD MEP Matthias Ecke in Dresden. He was seriously injured. A group of four also attacked a 28-year-old who was putting up election posters for the Greens. The unknown suspects punched and kicked the man, who suffered injuries.

On Saturday, the AfD member of the Lower Saxony state parliament reported an attack during an appearance at the campaign stand in Nordhorn. He was first thrown with eggs and then a man hit him. The police confirmed an assault on a member of the state parliament.
