Pakistan’s Sports Minister Sparks Controversy as World Cup Venue Debate Intensifies

MUMBAI: The venues for the Asia Cup and the World Cup have been hot topics in the cricket world in recent times. Following the approval of the hybrid model proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), a new twist has emerged in the matter. Pakistan’s sports minister has made a statement that is once again causing controversy.

The Pakistani Sports Minister stated that if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insists on holding the Asia Cup at a neutral venue, the Pakistan team will refuse to come to India for the World Cup. “This is my personal opinion. As the PCB falls under my ministry, if India wants their Asia Cup matches to be played at a neutral venue, we will also demand the same for the World Cup matches in India,” the minister asserted.

Pakistan’s Sports Minister’s statement came shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a committee to discuss Pakistan’s team’s participation in the World Cup. The committee will review the issue and provide its recommendations to the UK Prime Minister, who will make the final decision.

Accusing India of politicizing sports, the minister expressed his confusion as to why the Indian government is not sending their cricket team to Pakistan. “Indian teams have played here before. Pakistan’s football, hockey, and chess teams regularly participate in matches in India. The argument of security reasons is simply an excuse,” Sports Minister Ehsan Mazari alleged.
