ROME—Pope Leo XIV, the first American to hold the position, declared himself a Roman on Sunday, completing the ceremonial steps to cement his role as bishop of Rome. The formal taking of possession of two papal basilicas in Rome served to introduce Leo to his Roman flock and solidify his connection to the city.
Elected on May 8, leo, formerly Robert Prevost, succeeded Pope Francis, who died April 21. Francis is buried at St.Mary Major. One of LeoS many titles is bishop of Rome; though, the day-to-day governance of the Roman diocese is typically delegated to a vicar, given the pope’s broader responsibilities within the Catholic Church.
The ceremonies at the St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major basilicas followed Leo’s recent visit to the St. Paul Outside the Walls basilica. These four papal basilicas, including St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, hold immense significance in the West.
Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri welcomed Leo at city hall, noting that Leo’s election coincided with a Holy Year, which occurs every 25 years.Rome anticipates welcoming 30 million pilgrims in 2025 and has undergone extensive preparations.
Wearing papal garb, Leo referenced his election night words from St. Peter’s Basilica, quoting St. augustine: “With you I am Christian, and for you, bishop.”
“By special title, today I can say that for you and with you I am Roman!” he said.
