danish experimental rock band Poptones has released “Skin of Sea,” the first single from their forthcoming second album, Pure.the album is due out Sept. 26 on Happy Metal Records.
“Skin of Sea” represents a notable evolution in the band’s sonic identity, embracing simplicity and emotional clarity. The song originated from an improvisation session in Northern Jutland, in the same house where former Danish Prime Minister Jens otto Krag died. In contrast to their more intricate earlier work, the track features a streamlined structure that emerged quickly and intuitively. Its sparse chord progression and ambient textures reveal a new vulnerability in Poptones’ music, showcasing their experimental rock sound.
The band said this shift in tone also introduced a new instrumental palette.
Poptones described their new approach to music production:
It was also our first dive into using instruments we hadn’t worked with before. Especially the outro pulled us toward a grander sound and opened up new ways of composing as Poptones.
The band added that the initial idea for “Skin of Sea” came together rapidly.
The first idea for ‘Skin of Sea’ came together quickly and intuitively, going from nothing to a finished sketch in just a few hours, which is far from our usual writing pace. Maybe that’s why the track leans more on simplicity in chords and structure. Intuitive ideas frequently enough have a clear sense of direction, which was definitely the case with “skin of Sea”. It was very inspiring to work with.
The release of ”skin of Sea” is accompanied by a self-directed video, filmed on a broken phone camera and slowed to 20% speed. This visual choice mirrors the track’s dreamy and disoriented feel. With its blurred, submerged aesthetic, the video enhances the song’s exploration of emotional drift and distortion, offering a preview of what to expect from Pure. “Skin of Sea” is available now, marking a new chapter in Poptones’ pop music journey.
