Preparing for the Monsoon: Thailand Braces for Rain and Cold

Opening the Way for the Monsoon: Rain and Cold Expected in Thailand

October 8, 2023

The Meteorological Department has released its daily accumulated rain forecast for the next 10 days, from October 8th to October 17th, 2023. According to the latest update from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) on October 7th, 2023, the monsoon trough is set to make its way across the northern, northeastern, and upper central regions. This will result in continuous rainfall in upper Thailand, with heavy rain expected in certain areas of the northern and upper northeastern regions. Additionally, a northerly wind will blow, accompanied by a cold northeasterly wind from the descending cold air mass. This marks the final phase of rain in upper Thailand and the transition from the rainy season to winter. However, due to the unpredictable weather patterns, caution is advised as heavy rain may still occur.

Between October 10th and 17th, 2023, a cold air mass in the form of high pressure will begin to descend, covering the northern and upper northeast regions of Thailand. As a result, colder temperatures can be expected in the mornings, with a shift in wind direction to a north-easterly flow. The monsoon trough will move southward, affecting the lower central, lower northeastern, upper eastern, and southern regions of the country. While rain is still possible along the monsoon trough, areas need to remain vigilant for heavy rain occurrences.

Regarding the tropical cyclone situation in the upper South China Sea, Typhoon KOINU is not projected to dissipate easily. However, it is anticipated to move westward along the southern coast of China on October 8th and 9th, 2023. Once it comes into contact with the cold air mass, it is expected to weaken. Fortunately, this storm will not have any impact on Thailand.

The current rain is influenced by the monsoon trough and the low-pressure area covering it. In the Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Bolaven (BOLAVEN) has formed and is projected to intensify further. Nevertheless, its distance from Thailand means it will not affect the country.

On the eastern side of the Philippines, there is a low-pressure area that is likely to move towards the South China Sea between October 12th and 15th, 2023. However, this is occurring during the same period when the cold air mass is spreading across upper Thailand, mitigating any impact on the country. Monitoring of the situation is still necessary.

Please note that the information provided is subject to change based on new data. Additionally, it is important to consider the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, which can bring fluctuations in rainfall and storm patterns when making weather-related decisions.

It is likely to move west along the southern coast of China on 8-9 October 2023, but when it collides with the cold air mass, it will weaken accordingly. This storm will have no impact on Thailand.

The rain comes from the monsoon trough and the low pressure area that currently covers it.

And in the Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Bolaven (BOLAVEN) has formed and is expected to become even stronger. But it is very far from Thailand. So there is no effect.

The low pressure area on the eastern side of the Philippines It is likely to move to the South China Sea during 12 -15 October 2023, but it formed during a period when a cold air mass was already spreading to cover upper Thailand. So there is no impact on Thailand. There is still a need to follow up from time to time.
