Russian leader Vladimir Putin shared Tehran’s perspective regarding a potential resolution to the conflict in Iran with U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Russian state media reports on Saturday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that Putin sent the message to Trump in agreement with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The diplomatic outreach follows a high-level meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian on the sidelines of a summit in Turkmenistan, where Putin affirmed Moscow’s readiness to play an active mediating role and praised what he described as genuine efforts by Tehran to de-escalate. Interfax did not elaborate on the specifics of how Iran sees the war coming to an end, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request to confirm the conversation.
Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Context
The conflict began on Feb. 28 with U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets. An interim deal signed in June between the U.S. and Iran to pause hostilities quickly broke down after Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz prompted the resumption of U.S. military operations. In recent times, parallel discussions held away from the main sessions between American and Iranian representatives at the United Nations General Assembly failed to produce any significant breakthrough.
During their discussions in Turkmenistan, Pezeshkian sharply criticized the American administration, accusing Washington of undermining diplomatic efforts, while Putin noted that the conflict significantly worsened after the late February strikes.
Related Energy Agreements
The diplomatic developments occurred alongside energy announcements, as Trump said Russia will supply more than 4 million tons of diesel to the global market under an arrangement agreed upon during a phone call with Putin. The Treasury Department subsequently temporarily waived sanctions on Russian diesel through April 2027 under a general license. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy immediately condemned the diesel deal, warning that easing sanctions without a commitment from Russia to de-escalate will only prolong the war.
Unanswered Questions
Although the Russian administration noted that Putin conveyed Tehran’s standpoint in consultation with Pezeshkian, officials in Moscow refrained from revealing Trump’s reaction to the communication or sharing further specifics concerning Iran’s terms for settling the hostilities.
