[ニューデリー 1日 ロイター] – According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the average temperature in April in the eastern part of the country was 28.12 degrees Celsius, the highest since records began in 1901. At least nine people have died from the hot weather.

Political experts cite the heat wave as one of the reasons for the low turnout in the general election which started on April 19th. Voting will take place in seven rounds and will be counted on June 4th.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the temperature will remain above normal in May.

IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra blamed the heat wave on the influence of El Nino, fewer thunderstorms than usual, and a reversal of cyclonic circulation near the southeast coast.

On the other hand, the central and north-western regions were largely spared from the heat wave due to frequent thunderstorms in April.
